// Another academic year over another flurry of creative designers unleashed to the world to show you what they're made of.  I thought I'd do my best to showcase as many of them as I can this year in a new series, I hope you enjoy looking through these emerging designers work as much as I do.

Lauren Ward Hand Beaded Eye - Graduate Fashion Collection 2015

Lauren Ward - UCA

Laurens stand out collection was definitely something of a head turner at her debut collection show. She learned her trade at the University of the Creative arts - I may be biased but it has to be THE best design school - and even interned with the highly coveted Meadham Kirchhoff duo.

The blaring music paired with her kitsch bead working and fun mix of lace and leather won Lauren at place at this years Graduate Fashion Week. Laurens love for traditional craft work was evident throughout her collection from the use of hand painting and hand embellishment skills.

‘Momento Mori’

‘Momento Mori’ is based on the concept of the dead attending a séance. It was inspired by the heavily adorned remains of catacomb saints and portraiture from gravestones.
The idea of a family of saints getting ready to revisit the living became my main inspiration. Every detail within the collection is inspired by the possible though process of the dead and the materials and methods they would have had to work with such as painting and embroidery.
This inspired a silhouette suggesting that their clothing had been tied in specific locations to make their clothes fit their now skeletal bodies. Their clothing is adorned with the portraits and jewels they were buried with as well as their feelings regarding their death.

The collection is fun, colourful and kitsch; everything that you don’t usually associate with death to demonstrate that the way the dead view their passing is the opposite of how it is viewed by the living.

Lauren Says:

Craft is a massive part of what I do and I aim to keep traditional methods alive in a contemporary context within my work.
I adorn my work in beads, embroidery and applique to create garments that have a life and want to be touched. I am inspired by the kitsch, the colourful and the weird and seek out these elements in the world around me.
My ultimate goal is a label of my own that consistently creates kitsch, fun, wearable pieces.
